Chapter 3 - Modification Documents

Modifications documents are often laid out as large tables of data in paper documents. Although this may work well and improve readability for paper documents, for online documents data displayed in this kind of tabular format is less accessible for those using screen readers or with impaired vision. It also doesn't work so well on mobile phones because tables generally require horizontal space which isn't available (try looking at the example below on a mobile phone or resize your browser window to its minimum width). To combat this problem, even if the data in the modifications word document is supplied to us as tables, we are able to "flatten" these tables out and display the data in a more readable format. We can also display inserts and deletes within the modifications document in two ways – the example below shows a table of modifications, then the same data "flattened". The first option shows green/red coloured sections with text before the start of the inserted and deleted text.  The second option for showing inserts and deletes is to use strikethrough for deletes and bold/underline for inserts. Please note that both the strikethrough deleted text and underlined/bold inserted text has been specially coded to inform screen readers of where the deleted or inserted status starts and ends.

Application of Wherever possible, major development, where feasible, will be required to provide a minimum of 10% of the predicted energy needs of the development from renewable energy. Where on-site provision of renewable technologies is not appropriate, or where it is clearly demonstrated that the above target cannot be fully achieved on-site, any shortfall should be provided through:

The additional text is originally set out in Clause F, which is now merged with clause C, as both refer to renewable technologies.

Or if a different way of displaying the inserts and deletes is preferred they can be shown as strikethrough for deletes and bold/underline for inserts:

Both of these display methods have hidden tags for screen readers so that the data is still accessible.
